How Do I Improve My Gut Health and Understand my Microbiome?

“All diseases begin in the gut”

– Hippocrates

This knowledge has been around for YEARS – but scientists are just proving this theory to be right!

If there’s one thing to know about the human body; it’s this: the human body has a ringmaster.  This ringmaster controls your digestion, your immunity, your brain, your weight, your health and even your happiness.  This ringmaster is the gut.

Our gut is located and ruled by our solar plexus chakra.

Did you know?

  • More than 70% of your immune system is housed in your gut.
  • The gut is the only organ system that can perform its functions without the oversights of the brain
  • 90% of the gut’s visceral nerve carry information from the gut to the brain where it is interpreted as emotions

When learning about gut health, you need to understand your microbiome and how it’s the big game changer.

What’s a Microbiome?

The microbiome is the collection of microbes (unique human cells and bacterial cells) that live within and on the human body.

  • Up to 90% of all disease can be traced in some way back to the gut and health of the microbiome
  • The genes in our microbiome outnumber the genes in our genome by about 100 to 1

This means that the gut microbiome is essential in educating the body’s immune system.

Although all humans have some species of bacteria and other microorganisms in common, each person’s microbiome is incredibly unique.

I had a Gut Intelligence test done by a company called VIOME – which personalizes nutritional recommendations based on my unique microbiome so I can optimize my health for life! My results included:

  • Metabolic Fitness (microbiome linked to glucose and weight control)
  • Inflammatory Activity (microbial activities linked to inflammation)
  • Microbial Richness (the total number of active species in my gut)
  • Food Recommendations (the supplements + superfoods I need in my diet, and foods that I should avoid completely)

My husband Colton also had a test done.  Even though we live under the same roof, have the same diet, exercise regularly and care a lot about nutrition and health, when we compared our results, our individual microbiomes were very different!  While my superfoods were yogurt, kale, banana, sunflower seeds, olive oil, eggs and artichoke; Colton’s were broccoli, chicken, eggs, lentils, olives, pumpkin, sage and more.  Learning this knowledge has helped me cook nutritional meals that balance both of our microbiome!

In recent years, my family members have discovered food allergies and battled some health issues.  After teaching them about gut health and sharing my test results, they are finally getting theirs done!  I’m going to assume even with our shared genetics, our results are still going to be divergent.
